The Periodic Table

The Periodic Table is a series based on the idea that the elements are building blocks of our lives. Similarly, the daily objects of our households are also the building blocks of our lives. These same objects are under particular scrutiny and exaggerated observation during the 2020 pandemic, as we have more time at home to see, observe, and appreciate them. Through her paintings and drawings of them, Luisa Adelfio seeks to honor their sanctity by giving them life and permanence through art.

Il Foglio

‘Il Foglio” is a series of Italian drawings executed as a parallel to the “Corona Chronicles” series drawn on the New York Times and other United States newspapers. The drawings were made in 2021, as some optimism was born around the COVID 19 vaccination and a slight return to normalcy. “Il Foglio”, the title to the newspaper, is also a play on words, as the word also means “sheet”, as in a sheet of paper on which to draw. The series records daily life, plays on past and present, and is a tribute to daily objects and daily activities in the artist’s life which are common to all and hopefully also resonate with the viewers.

Corona Chronicles

Corona Chronicles is a series of drawings executed on the poignant May 24, 2020 issue of the New York Times that commemorated the marker of 100,000 deaths in the United States due to Coronavirus. Life and Death are juxtaposed in live plants/dead leaves, in music/silence, in writing/blank page, in an empty chair that still feels the presence of a body, and in time passing/time standing still. Memory and the fleeting quality of life play prominently.
